Continental Photo Contest

The Continental Photo Contest is a new photo award that is a reflection of the curiosities of photographers from all over the world. It is the best photo challenge we have come up with where we can show the differences between different parts of the world and at the same time learn from it and unite in a common space.

That is, broadly speaking, the essence of this international photo competition. Because, no matter how close we are, our origins influence us and our understanding of photography, but so does the world we know. It is with this in mind that the Continental Photo Contest was born.

Thus, we have divided this photographic prize into six categories representing different continents. Each of these categories is completely open to receive any type of photograph, landscapes, portraits, architectural photography… the only rule is that it must belong to the continent in which it is presented. Because what we want to recover in this international competition are those elements that inspire us and move us to get to know the world. Those cultures that we don’t know, those traditions that surprise us, those animals that don’t exist anywhere else… and, around this, to grow together.

There are several continental models. For these international photo awards, we have decided to stick with the most popular one (albeit with some minor adjustments), which divides our planet into 6 continents. These places have enough historical and cultural strength to be identified by a multitude of media. Whether for their gastronomy, their architecture, their fauna… all our continents have a history of their own and, for better or worse, all of them have shared enough to be inevitably influenced by each other.

These elements, which separate us and unite us at the same time, are the same ideas we have in our heads when we think of this competition. To see each of these continents represented and, through photography, to unite and learn from each other. Rediscovering our influences.

The following categories have been placed in this photography competition:

Africa

Considered the cradle of humanity, Africa is known for its cultural diversity and beautiful landscapes. From the majestic Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the breathtaking Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe, this continent offers a rich variety of natural experiences. It also boasts unique wildlife, such as the ‘big five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). But these are just some of its attractions. A continent like this, full of peculiarities for most countries that do not belong to it, is the perfect example of diversity in all its forms.

This continent, as one of the categories of our photo contest, is waiting for photographs taken on this continent. Captures that represent its landscapes, its many ways of life, its past and its present. Images that inspire us and bring us closer to the great place that is Africa.

America (without Greenland)

America is home to a wide range of cultures and breathtaking landscapes. From the awe-inspiring Andes Mountains in South America to the dazzling gorges of the Grand Canyon in the United States, this continent offers a great diversity of natural wonders. It also boasts vibrant cities, such as New York and Rio de Janeiro, as well as rich history and cultural heritage in places like Machu Picchu and Chichen Itza.

America is a land of contrasts. A vibrant place where tradition and modernity meet. Where the past and the future meet in equal measure. Every corner of this huge continent is full of inspiration and influences.

As a category, America is looking for photos taken on this continent. Images that catch the eye of the beholder and make themselves worthy of being highlighted in this global photography award.

Antarctica (including the North Pole and Greenland)

Embark on a visual journey to the icy realms of Antarctica, the North Pole and Greenland. This vast and dazzling polar territory offers landscapes of astounding beauty, from majestic ice-capped mountains to the serenity of the Arctic expanses. The aurora borealis dances in the sky, while majestic whales breach the surface of the water with their tails.

Asia

Immerse yourself in the Asia category and uncover the enchantment of the world’s largest and most diverse continent. Oceania

Oceania is a realm of breathtaking landscapes, from the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef to the lush rainforests of Papua New Guinea. These photo awards 2024 offer the following list of distinctions for the winning photographers in this first edition of the Continental Photo Contest.

World Best Photo Award 2024

The overall winner of this worldwide photo contest. The author of the photograph designated by the jury and the organization will be awarded the following prizes:

• €1000 in cash prize.
• The exhibition of his or her photograph in our gallery and on our website.
• The winning photograph in a prominent place in our yearbook.
• The exhibition of your photograph in specialized media all over the world.
• The possibility of having your work exhibited in several countries.

Winner Category

Each of the continents is considered a category of these photography awards. Each of the six winners will be rewarded with:

• €100 in cash prize.
• Their photograph in our gallery.
• The featured photograph in our yearbook.
• The exhibition of your photograph in specialized media around the world.
• The possibility of having their work exhibited in several countries.

Honorable Mentions

In addition to the aforementioned prizes, the Continental Photo Contest jury may select many photographs from among the participants that may be awarded with titles such as, for example, the best macrophotography of the contest, prize for the most creative photograph, best portrait of the 2024 competition…

These titles are not necessarily limited by the rules and the jury may award as many as it deems appropriate.

In addition to these awards, both the honorable mentions and the most outstanding photographs of the finalists will be displayed in the competition’s gallery, in its various networks and, in some cases, in specialized media. It is possible that some of these images may also be exhibited in different countries around the world.

For the Continental Photo Contest organization it is very important that all these places are well represented. It is also critical that the photography submissions for our photo awards are selected by a capable and professional jury. That is why, for this edition of our 2024 photo competition, we have selected a jury of expert photographers. All of them are experienced professionals with a variety of honors.

The judging process for this photo contest takes place in a series of simple rounds.

The first round, the selection round, eliminates photographs that do not comply with any of the rules of the Continental Photo Contest 2024. All photographs that do not respect these rules will be rejected before the voting process begins.

The second round os this photography awards, carried out by the competition organisers, is a first quality filter that will exclude photographs that do not meet the minimum quality criteria. This selection will include all those photographs that meet the minimum quality standards and comply with the Continental Photo Contest rules.

In the third round, participants are asked to submit the original formats of those images that have passed the above-mentioned filters of this photo award. In most cases this means that the organisers will ask the photographers for the original, unmodified RAW or JPG files. This step helps to detect forgeries or AI-generated images.

Once this step has been completed, the juries will have access to the photos that meet the aforementioned requirements. These photos will be individually assessed by the 6 members of the jury of the photography contest, who will give each photo a score.

From this data, a selection will be generated that will help to decide, as a whole, the different winners of the photo competition. The winners will be notified as soon as possible, and the competition gallery will be the first place where the results will be published.

There are several continental models. For these international photo awards, we have decided to stick with the most popular one (albeit with some minor adjustments), which divides our planet into 6 continents. These places have enough historical and cultural strength to be identified by a multitude of media. Whether for their gastronomy, their architecture, their fauna… all our continents have a history of their own and, for better or worse, all of them have shared enough to be inevitably influenced by each other.

These elements, which separate us and unite us at the same time, are the same ideas we have in our heads when we think of this competition. To see each of these continents represented and, through photography, to unite and learn from each other. Rediscovering our influences.

The following categories have been placed in this photography competition:

Africa

Considered the cradle of humanity, Africa is known for its cultural diversity and beautiful landscapes. From the majestic Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the breathtaking Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe, this continent offers a rich variety of natural experiences. America (without Greenland)

America is home to a wide range of cultures and breathtaking landscapes. From the awe-inspiring Andes Mountains in South America to the dazzling gorges of the Grand Canyon in the United States, this continent offers a great diversity of natural wonders. It also boasts vibrant cities, such as New York and Rio de Janeiro, as well as rich history and cultural heritage in places like Machu Picchu and Chichen Itza.

America is a land of contrasts. A vibrant place where tradition and modernity meet. Where the past and the future meet in equal measure. Every corner of this huge continent is full of inspiration and influences.

As a category, America is looking for photos taken on this continent. Images that catch the eye of the beholder and make themselves worthy of being highlighted in this global photography award.

Antarctica (including the North Pole and Greenland)

Who can participate in this photo comp?

This photography competition is open to all types of photographers. Both professional and amateur photographers can participate. No matter their resume, experience or equipment, only the quality of their photographs. These photography awards can be an excellent springboard to reach new heights.

What kind of images can I send?

All the categories of this photo contest are open, that is, you can participate with any type of photograph.

Why do we do this?

It is impossible to reduce the culture, history, or way of life of a land as vast as a continent to simple categories. We consider that the photographer’s vision is also an indispensable element, both for the photograph and for the photographed. Thus, giving wide freedom of choice has seemed to us the best way for this photo contest to reflect the world it intends to show.

We like to see how these places are shown through the eyes of photographers of all kinds. That also includes moments of intimacy, the different approaches seen when taking a portrait, or the way two strangers look at each other.

At the same time, we can’t help but think of those elements that are unique to each continent. In those unrepeatable landscapes, in the animals that can only be photographed by magicians of the lens, the customs that still remain in inaccessible places… all these elements and many more have a place in the categories of these photography awards. Because it was impossible to put limits to something as great as diversity.

Why these six continents?

To divide the categories of this photo contest we have based the system of 6 continents that is usually called Traditional. It is the same system used by the UN or represented in the Olympic rings, but adding Antarctica (we didn’t want to leave anything out).

Can I only send photos from the continent I belong to?

No. You can submit photos from all over the world to this photo challenge. One of the essences of the Continental Photo Contest is to be able to show not only the different cultures of our world, but also the way they interact.

In order to make the most of this hodgepodge, we have decided that we can’t put bars on the photographers who participate in these photo awards. So, wherever you are from, you can submit photos taken anywhere in the world. Just remember to upload them to the continent where they were taken.

Can I submit more than one photo to the photo contest?

Yes, you can upload up to X photos for each category of this photo contest and participate in as many categories as you want.

What retouching can I apply to my photograph?

The line that separates a photographic retouching from a substantial modification can be very fine. This photo contest respects and supports the use of all modern and traditional editing techniques, as long as they do not modify the essence of the original photograph.

What does this mean?

This means that you can apply levels, curves, filters… and a long etcetera, as long as the objective is not lost. Let’s remember that this photo competition aims to show our world, its inhabitants and its reality. So do not allow the elimination of subjects, the addition of elements, or any change that, in the eyes of the jury, involves an alteration of the photograph beyond what retouching allows.

Can I participate in these photography awards if I use film (analog photography)?

Definitely, yes. Analog photography is one of the foundations of modern photography and one of the most important cultural elements of recent history. However, it offers the problem that you cannot submit an original film image to our photo contest.

If you digitize your captures and want to participate, please note that if one of your photos is selected, you will be asked to send the original RAW file. Don’t worry, you can substitute it with a photo of the film with sufficient quality so that the judges can compare it with the photo submitted to the contest.

Why is the RAW file of my photograph requested?

RAW photographs are the equivalent of analog camera negatives. In a world where photo retouching has reached new heights and artificial intelligence is capable of creating realistic images, the original files are one of the best ways to check the authenticity of the snapshots submitted to this photography contest.

Can I participate if my camera does not shoot RAW?

Yes, as it happens with analog photography lovers, we believe that we should not close the doors to anyone. If your camera does not have RAW format, don’t worry. In case your image is selected and you are asked for the original RAW file, you must send the original image with its metadata to be eligible to win this photography award.

Is there any cost to participate in the Continental Photo Contest?

Yes. Entry to this international photography award carries a fee of 15 euros per category (continent). This allows you to submit up to X photographs per unlocked category.

Of course, you can participate in as many categories as you wish.
